1. Scan Your Mac

In order to speed up your Mac and make sure that it’s performing to its top potential, you’ll want to scan your Mac. Clean your malware as well. You’ll also want to clear up space and delete photos that you don’t need.

There are various forms of software to use in order to have anti-malware on your computer. As you clear space on your Mac, you might also remove dangerous malware as well. Find software that protects you against malicious websites, ransomware, malware, and more.

2. Stop Non-Essential Utilities

Different services such as home file-sharing, cloud-based services, Bluetooth, and others aren’t necessary to run in the background. As you let them run, they could wind up slowing down your computer. They could take up space in your RAM as well.

In order to see what’s running, take a look at the top navigation bar. It’s located on the right corner of your screen. The more that you have running, the slower your computer will be.

3. Delete Unneeded Files

Mac regular maintenance needs to include deleting unneeded files. As items become more advanced, so has the size of image files.

6. Remove Desktop Icons

The more items on your Desktop, the more RAM is being taken up. This drains your resources and the speed of your computer.

Remove any icon that you don’t need. The macOS Catalina has the option called Stacks.

In order to use this, you’ll click on a blank space on your desktop. Next, click Use Stacks.

There’s also a Show View Options as well. There you can choose the size of the icons on your Desktop to speed up your computer.

7. Restart Your Mac

Keep your Mac running smoothly and up-to-date by restarting it periodically. This will regenerate some cache files, free up RAM, and get rid of memory swaps.

In order to keep it good to go, it’s a good idea to restart it at least once every 2 weeks. If you don’t, you could be missing out on the newest software, or your computer might run slower.

8. Check Your Hardware

Check your computer’s hardware and not just your software. There are different programs that’ll help you keep track of your hardware.

Take a look at the status of your drive in order to see what needs a backup or replacement. It’s a good idea to do this at least once per month.

9. Check the Directory

Head to Apple’s Disk Utility in order to perform directory maintenance. You can fix apps closing, external devices that aren’t working properly, and fix file corruptions.

In order to launch this, head to your Hard Drive Disk. Click on the First Aid tab and this will tell you what you need to repair. Write down any issues that you find along the way and try to get to the source of the problem.

10. Restart Web Browsers

Leaving browsers open for too long can slow down your web browsers. This will free up space on your Mac and increase the performance. If you notice that your computer is slowing down, close and restart the web browsers.

11. Shut Down Apps

When they’re not in use, you can shut down apps. If you close the program with the x button, that doesn’t stop the app from running. This will allow you to preserve space and turn off apps when they’re not in use.
